Be realistic about what your qualifications really are. At the same time, you should think about how the job listings fits within your career. You may really need a job, but there is a reason why companies won’t hire someone they consider to be over qualified. When none are in the job listings, you have to take the rest of the ad into consideration before you apply. When looking at a position that is something that is way below your experience, you should skip it. If you know the position is far beyond your reach, it won’t matter what your qualifications or education might be. They know you will leave the moment something better comes along.

Really read each of the job listings you find without prejudice. However, just one thing can mean the job is not what you want. These job listings are iffy ones. That means that you should never assume anything about the job or put your own spin on it. Don’t assume the job will be the same, as they rarely are. If some of it sounds like what you have been doing, it might be a good match for you. You can apply, but be clear in the interview that you need to know more about the position. You may end up with a job that you can’t do, and you may soon leave. That is not the best thing to have in your work history.

You may think you have found a great job in the paper or online, only to be blind sided when you go in for an interview. It’s hard when you need work, but taking the time to find the right employment listings is going to pay off in the end.
